Empowering Children Through Community Partnerships

At the Early Learning Society of Kamloops, we believe in the power of hands-on learning experiences to ignite curiosity and foster a lifelong love of discovery in young minds. That's why we are proud to partner with community-based organizations like the Big Little Science Center to bring engaging and interactive science education to our preschool-aged children.

One of the highlights of our partnership with Big Little Science Center and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans was the successful delivery of the Stream to Sea program, piloted for the first time in an early learning setting. With their thoughtful commitment to supporting our initiative, Big Little Science Center provided invaluable resources and expertise, allowing us to tailor the program to suit the needs and interests of our preschool-aged children.

The Stream to Sea program, typically aimed at older children, was adapted and customized to ensure its relevance and accessibility to our youngest learners. Through a combination of age-appropriate activities, storytelling, and hands-on exploration, children were introduced to the wonders of aquatic ecosystems, learning about the journey of salmon from stream to sea and back again.

Our partnership with Big Little Science Center extends beyond the Stream to Sea program. With the support of the BC Interior Community Fund grant, we are collaborating to develop a suite of science-based experiments and activities specifically geared towards children aged zero to five. Drawing on their expertise in science delivery and our understanding of early childhood development, we will be co-creating learning opportunities that are not only pedagogically sound but also engaging and accessible to our young learners.

As we continue to collaborate with BLSC, we are reminded of the transformative power of community partnerships in enriching children's learning experiences. By leveraging each other's strengths and resources, we create opportunities for children to engage with science in a hands-on and meaningful way, setting the stage for a lifetime of curiosity and exploration.
