As the number of Métis children in our programs continues to grow, the Early Learning Society of Kamloops is strengthening its connection with the Métis Education and Child Care Program (MECCP), led by Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC).

Creating a truly welcoming and inclusive environment means that care must be accessible, culturally responsive, and reflective of the children and families we serve. By connecting more closely with MECCP, we’re working to ensure that Métis families can access meaningful supports, and that Métis children feel seen, valued, and supported in their early learning environments.

How the Métis Education and Child Care Program Supports Families

The Métis Education and Child Care Program provides several layers of support designed to help Métis children thrive both at home and in child care settings:

  • Métis Child Care Benefit (MCCB): A monthly subsidy of up to $750 per child to make quality licensed or registered care more affordable for Métis families.
  •  Supported Child Care Services: Additional assistance for children who may need extra support to participate fully in the classroom.
  •  Cultural Resource Support: Access to Métis-focused learning materials and guidance, ensuring that children can see their culture represented and celebrated every day.
  •  Métis Family Connections – Early Years Program: A bridge for families to connect with cultural events, community networks, and early years resources.

These supports are generously offered through MNBC and are available to families enrolled at licensed child care programs such as ours.

Supporting Providers to Create Inclusive Spaces

MECCP also provides guidance and resources to child care providers, helping educators create programs that reflect and celebrate Métis heritage. This support strengthens our ability to deliver culturally safe care — ensuring that Métis children see themselves represented and that all children gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s diverse cultural identities.

At the Early Learning Society of Kamloops, this collaboration helps us:

  • Make care more accessible for Métis families
  • Ensure Métis children feel seen and supported in daily routines
  • Equip educators with resources and knowledge to integrate Métis culture in authentic ways
  • Foster mutual respect and curiosity among all children in our classrooms

Inclusion Benefits Everyone

While these programs directly support Métis families, they also enrich our entire community. When children learn about different cultures and traditions, they develop empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging in our increasingly diverse city.

Our partnership with MNBC’s Métis Education and Child Care Program reflects our broader commitment — guided by the BC Early Learning Framework — to nurture inclusive, connected communities where every child can see themselves and feel that they belong.
