Family Learning: Bridging Classroom and Home

At the Early Learning Society, we recognize the profound impact that family engagement has on a child's learning journey. Through our family learning opportunities, we've witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of connecting classroom experiences with home environments, creating a seamless continuum of learning that extends beyond the walls of our center.

Our family learning opportunities take place during pick-up and drop-off times, where children eagerly share their daily discoveries and adventures with parents and extended family members. These moments of connection not only reinforce the learning that occurs in the classroom but also spark new questions and conversations that continue at home and around the dinner table.

One of the most tangible examples of family learning in action is our family learning area, where children can observe salmon fry hatching, chicks emerging from their shells, and butterfly larvae undergoing metamorphosis. The excitement and wonder that children experience in witnessing these natural phenomena are shared with their families, igniting curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Family learning opportunities also extend beyond science experiences to include cultural learning as well. During events such as Persian New Year's (Nowruz), Black History Month, Diwali, and Holi, families stop to explore cultural exhibits in our common areas and engage in conversations sparked by their children's questions and discoveries. These moments of cultural exchange not only enrich children's understanding of the world but also celebrate diversity and promote empathy and understanding.

This approach to family learning aligns with the principles of the BC early learning framework, which recognizes the vital role of parents as educators and partners in their children's learning journey. By actively involving families in their child's education, we create a supportive and collaborative learning environment that nurtures curiosity, fosters lifelong learning, and strengthens family bonds.
