Community is essential for helping children develop a true sense of belonging. Through a dynamic exchange of ideas among children, educators, families, the broader community and the natural world, each layer influences the others. Children bring their unique experiences, cultures, and perspectives to the learning process. Their voices extend outward, shaping the roles of educators, families, and the broader community. In turn, these outer communities reflect back fresh ideas and insights, deepening children's understanding and broadening their worldview. The natural environment also plays a crucial role, offering experiences that strengthen children's connection to the land.
This ongoing exchange creates a rich learning environment where every child can thrive, promoting respect, inclusion, and an appreciation for both cultural diversity and the natural world.
The Early Learning Society of Kamloops acknowledges that we are on the traditional lands of the Secwepemc Nation. We honour their rich culture and traditions, and are committed to weaving Indigenous values of respect, care, and stewardship into all aspects of our service. We aspire to create a space where all children and families are inspired and connected to the impact of Indigenous teachings, fostering a future of respect, understanding and community.
We are proud to work alongside Indigenous educators that generously share their experience and culture with peer educators, as well as children and families.
Diversity is an important element of our programming. Our community and multi-cultural staff serve as invaluable guides to the rich tapestry of global cultures, enriching our cultural programming opportunities. As we celebrate Diwali, Holi, Nowruz, Black History month and Chinese New Year, we're not only fostering cultural understanding but creating authentic experiences that resonate with children and families, nurturing empathy, and appreciation for diverse perspectives.
Food is more than just nourishment—it's a bridge that connects us to our diverse cultures and traditions. Our meal program is thoughtfully designed to reflect our multi-cultural community, offering children the opportunity to explore and appreciate a variety of foods from around the world. Each meal becomes a celebration of diversity, where children can share their own cultural stories while learning about the cultures of their peers. The majority of our meals are kid approved! *Please note that the full hot meal program is only available at our Main Campus at this time and accommodates a range of food allergies, sensitivities and cultural/religious preferences.
The Society is committed to supporting children with unique needs and currently administers over 30 Care Plans. Despite critical shortages within the provincial system, educators and management work hard to provide care, develop collaborative care plans and connect families with specialized support through a dedicated network of community professionals. Our relationships with the Children’s Therapy & Family Resource Centre, Kamloops Childcare Resource and Referral, Interior Community Services, and BC Family Hearing enable us to facilitate access to vital services. Together, we work to empower children and families with the resources they need to feel connected, supported, and ready to flourish within our community.
Our nature-based programming is designed to deepen children’s connection to the land, creating a sense of belonging and appreciation for the local environment that surrounds them. By engaging with local plants and animals, children come to see themselves as part of the natural world. This experience encourages a sense of responsibility, curiosity, and respect that will guide them throughout their lives.
Through our community partnerships, these connections are further enriched. Working with the Big Little Science Centre and the Department of Fisheries, we introduced the Stream to Sea project—a hands-on exploration of the life cycles and habitats of local fish and the interconnectedness of aquatic ecosystems. Through this program, children learn the importance of caring for the lands and waters that sustain us. Together, these experiences help children form a lasting bond with the place they call home.
Our 25+ year collaboration with local academic institutions underscores our commitment to excellence in Early Childhood Education. Through mentoring, hosting practicum students, and hosting student observations, we not only share our experience but also support a culture of learning and growth. These partnerships enrich our programs, deepen our understanding of best practices, and help us provide high-quality care and education for all children in our community.
